Where It Started
A Different Kind of Martial Arts School

Founded by Charlie Cosens
Cosens Martial Arts was founded in 2009 by Charlie Cosens, a lifelong martial artist whose experience includes years of coaching, competition, and training throughout the United States, Brazil, and Thailand.

Charlie’s background exposed him to different styles, coaches, training methods, and philosophies from around the martial arts world.

Those experiences helped shape the idea behind Cosens Martial Arts: martial arts instruction should be practical, well-rounded, structured, and accessible to normal people who simply want to learn.

What Began as One School Grew
Over the years, more students walked through our doors, more instructors developed, and Cosens Martial Arts expanded into new communities.

Today, Cosens Martial Arts operates nine locations throughout Michigan.

The organization has grown, but the core idea has stayed the same: provide students with high-quality martial arts instruction in a place where they can learn, challenge themselves, and enjoy being part of the team.

Our Approach
Martial Arts Doesn’t Have to Fit in One Box

We care less about the name of a style and more about what that style can teach.
The Cosens curriculum draws from Muay Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Western Boxing, Taekwondo, Karate, Krav Maga, Judo, and other martial arts systems.

Students are exposed to striking, grappling, movement, coordination, fitness, self-defense, and problem solving rather than being limited to a single area of martial arts.

We believe a well-rounded martial artist should always be learning.

Why We Teach
Different Students. Different Goals.

For Kids
Martial arts gives children something rare: an activity that challenges the body and the mind at the same time.

Our youth programs teach martial arts while reinforcing qualities such as focus, discipline, control, listening, perseverance, respect, and coordination.

We also believe kids should actually enjoy being here. Progress matters, but so does creating an environment where students look forward to training, seeing their coaches, and spending time with their teammates.

For Adults
Adults come to martial arts for all kinds of reasons.

Some want to get in better shape. Some want to learn practical self-defense. Some miss the challenge and competition they had when they played sports. Others simply want a hobby that gives them something new to learn.

Whatever brings someone through the door, our goal is to give them a place where progress never has to stop.

An Important Part of Who We Are
Everybody Starts Somewhere

Nobody walks into their first martial arts class already knowing martial arts.
Most of our students begin with little or no previous experience.

You don’t need to already be athletic. You don’t need to be flexible. You don’t need to know how to punch, kick, wrestle, or grapple.

A good martial arts school should be able to teach you those things.

More Than a Curriculum
The Culture Matters

Knowing martial arts is only part of being a good instructor.

Great coaches need patience. They need to communicate. They need to understand that the nervous beginner walking through the door deserves just as much attention as the experienced student.

We work to create schools where people can train hard without feeling like they have something to prove.

Learn
Ask questions and develop real skills.

Challenge Yourself
Get better without comparing yourself to everyone else.

Belong
Train in an environment built around respect.

We’re Proud of How Far We’ve Come.
But martial arts has always been about the next step.

The next technique. The next challenge. The next student who walks through the door unsure of what they’re capable of.

That’s the story Cosens Martial Arts has been building since 2009, and we’re still building it today.
